Fill dirt is subsoil from below the surface layer. Sod, roots and organic matter are left out of it, so it packs down and holds its shape. That is what goes under a house pad or into a low spot in the yard. Topsoil is the dark layer off the top, and it goes on last for grass.
Crusher run is crushed stone mixed with its own dust. The small stuff fills the gaps between the rock. It binds and packs hard once it is graded, wet and rolled. That is why it goes down as base under a drive or a parking area.
Chert is the other material people ask for around here. It is a local rock, harder than limestone but smoother, so it takes heavier packing to lock together. Some jobs run chert as the base and crushed stone on top. We bring in what your job calls for, load by load.
Dirt work makes a pile. A dig leaves spoil, land clearing leaves stumps and brush, and a pond job leaves plenty of both. Some gets spread on site where it helps. The rest goes on the trucks and leaves the property.
We load with the trackhoe or the skid steer. The machines that make the pile also load it out. Rock and boulders pulled out of a pad or a pasture ride out the same way. So do old concrete, slabs and the debris from a small demolition job.
Where the trucks can get in matters as much as what is in the pile. Soft ground after a wet week, tight turns and low limbs all change the plan. We look at the way in and the turnaround before we load the first truck.
A standard tandem axle dump truck holds somewhere around 10 to 16 cubic yards. By weight that runs about 12 to 16 tons on a legal load. With gravel or wet dirt, the truck hits its weight limit before the bed fills up. A load of stone can look half empty and still be everything the truck can legally carry.
Common soil swells about 20 to 30 percent coming out of the ground. A hole gives up more loose yards than it measured in place. Put that same dirt back and pack it in lifts, and it shrinks again. Fill counts and haul off counts rarely match on paper.
So we count loads at the site instead of off a chart. We look at the depth, the area, the material and where a truck can turn around. It works the same way across the rest of our excavation and dirt work. You get the load count and the estimate after we have seen the ground.

The debris leaves the property and the dirt gets rough graded back out. Water is shaped to run away from the pad, the drive or the house. Then we look the job over with you.
