A gravel driveway has two jobs: carry traffic and move water off itself. We build new gravel driveways and farm roads across North Alabama, and we regrade old ones that have rutted out. Most of the work happens under the rock. Gravel spread on soft, unshaped dirt sinks out of sight in a season.
A new drive starts with the route. We clear the route when trees and brush are in the way, then cut the base down to firm ground. Our dump trucks bring the crusher run, gravel or chert, and we spread and grade it. One company cuts the base and hauls the rock, so there is no second contractor to line up.

Every drive starts with the route and the water. We look at where the drive has to run, how steep it is, and where water already crosses the ground. Trees, stumps and topsoil come off the route. Black dirt will not hold rock, so we cut down to firm ground.
Then the base gets cut and shaped. The trackhoe and dozer bring the drive to grade and roll a crown into it. A crown is a high center that sheds water to both sides. Road agencies build cross slope into gravel roads for the same reason. Flat surfaces hold water and pothole.
Rocky routes get the ripper first. We pull the rock out where it sits in the way. Buried lines get located before we dig. Alabama 811 is the free one call service, and a call gets utility lines marked.
Old drives fail in a pattern. Ruts form where tires run the same track. Water gets into the ruts and runs down the drive instead of off it. Surface rock washes to the low end and the base shows through.
We regrade the whole drive. The blade cuts the high spots and fills the ruts with material already on the drive. Then we reshape the crown and add fresh rock where the surface has thinned. Ditches get cleaned out or cut where the water has nowhere to go.
Drives here take a beating in wet winters and spring rain. North Alabama gets around 55 inches of rain in a year. A drive shaped to shed water holds up through it.
Material comes down to the ground under the drive and what runs on top of it. Crusher run is crushed rock with the fines left in it. The fines pack in between the stone and lock the surface up. Angular crushed rock keys together that way, and smooth round gravel rolls under a tire.
Chert comes out of local pits and surfaces a lot of drives and farm roads in this part of Alabama. Rain packs chert down and firms it up. Chert over a coarser rock base is a common build here.
Farm roads get the same treatment at a rougher grade. We cut the road bed, crown it, and put rock where the ground stays soft. Gate approaches and turnarounds take the most rock, because that is where trucks and tractors sit and spin.
