Ground around Moulton hides rock. The town sits in the Moulton Valley, between Little Mountain and the bluffs of the Cumberland Plateau. Moulton sits on the floor of the Moulton Valley, cut into Bangor limestone. Little Mountain forms the north wall, a sandstone ridge near 840 feet in Lawrence County. To the south the plateau escarpment climbs a few hundred feet toward Bankhead National Forest. Valley soil runs deep red clay in the best fields, with rock near the surface elsewhere.
Limestone weathers into sinkholes and hollow ground. One corner of a pad can dig easy while the next rings on stone. We run trackhoes with rippers and pull the rock out of the ground. The dump trucks haul it off, or we stack it at the edge of the field.
Solid ledge is a different story, and we say so when we find it. Ripping works on broken and bedded rock. A shelf of solid stone calls for methods outside what we do. On most jobs here the rock comes out, the cut gets to grade, and the work moves on.
Lawrence County farms hard. It is one of Alabama's leading cotton counties, and corn, soybeans, wheat and cattle fill in the rest. South of Moulton the land turns to timber and hollows running toward Bankhead National Forest. Ground at both ends grows up fast when a field or a fence line sits idle.
Land clearing and pasture reclamation here usually start with cedar, sweetgum, privet and honeysuckle. Eastern red cedar likes the limestone ground in the valley, and it thickens a pasture edge in a few seasons. We push and pile with the dozer, pull stumps and roots with the trackhoe, and haul the debris off. What is left is rough-graded ground you can mow, fence or build on.
When the trees are small and you want the ground kept covered, forestry mulching does the job instead. The skid steer grinds brush and saplings in place and leaves a mulch layer behind. The mulch holds the soil while grass comes back. It suits trails, shooting lanes, view corridors and grown-up pasture edges around Speake and Landersville.
Most new houses in this part of Lawrence County go up on acreage. That means a driveway off a county road, a pad cut into a slope, and water to move. We build compacted house pads for homes, barns, shops and metal buildings. Fill is brought in, compacted in lifts and built to the grade your plan calls for.
Water is the part people forget. A pad that sits level with the yard will hold rain against the building. We grade the ground so it falls away from the pad, then rough-grade the area around it. Your builder and the county set the pad elevation and any permits, and we cut the dirt to match.
Driveways run long out here. A gravel driveway on a Lawrence County lot can run several hundred feet before it reaches the house. We cut the base, shape a crown so rain sheds off, and ditch where water needs a path. Crusher run, gravel or chert goes down on top, and we grade it smooth.
Farm ponds fit this country. Cattle ground, hunting land and back pastures around Mount Hope, Wren and Chalybeate Springs all use them. We dig and shape farm ponds, build up the bank, and clean out ponds that have silted in. Spoil is spread on site or hauled away, depending on what you want the ground to look like.
Old structures come down too. Barns, sheds, mobile homes, small houses and old slabs get torn out with the trackhoe. A small demolition runs the same way each time: utilities off, structure down, debris out, spot graded. Commercial buildings, multi-story work and hazardous material are outside what we take on.
Lawrence County has taken direct hits from storms. The April 27, 2011 Hackleburg and Phil Campbell tornado crossed at EF5 strength through Mount Hope, near Moulton. Spring storms since then still drop trees across pastures, drives and fence lines. Two dump trucks and a lowboy let us bring machines in and carry debris out on the same job.
